Energy storage systems in the form of accumulators can pose a high fire risk with far-reaching consequences for people, animals and property.
The fire-resistant housing of energy storage systems in the form of accumulators for the general power supply serves both to protect against fire hazards that may arise from these systems and to protect these systems in the event of a fire.
The current Model Ordinance on the Construction of Operating Rooms for Electrical Installations (M-EltBauVO), adopted by the Conference of Building Ministers in Germany, contains, for the first time, requirements for the installation of energy storage systems in the form of accumulators for the general power supply. This amendment was made due to the increasing future demand for the installation of energy storage systems to provide energy from renewable sources.
The requirements as a protection concept apply to energy storage systems > 20kWh, but can also be applied to smaller energy storage systems
< 20kWh, e.g. for the home sector, can be applied accordingly.
For example, room-enclosing components for accommodating energy storage systems must have the same fire resistance as the load-bearing walls and columns of a storey, but must at least be fire-retardant (fire resistance 30 minutes).
Further requirements are placed on the safe operation of the energy storage system, such as ventilation, air conditioning or, for systems >100 kWh, additional smoke extraction or automatic extinguishing.
